Title: Vice President and General Counsel Location: Dallas Age: 44 Knowing the Score There’s a good reason why Lamar Hunt trusts Alan W. Tompkins with his legal work: Hunt wants to keep his money. Tompkins is a straight-shooting lawyer and CPA with a small-town set of values and an MBA. He will not tolerate extortion-type claims against his deep-pocket clients. And, says longtime litigation colleague Geoffrey S. Harper, he has the reputation to back that up. “He’s never paid a dime when he didn’t think he had to,” says Harper, a principal in Fish & Richardson. Harper recalls a settlement negotiation in a $15 million case, in which the Hunts were the deepest pockets. The spirit of a settlement was reached, he says, when Tompkins announced that neither he nor the Hunts’ insurer was going to settle. The deal was falling apart, but other parties to the litigation began to chip in until another settlement was reached. “I remember telling [Tompkins] that was the dumbest thing he could do, and an hour later I was buying him a drink,” Harper says. Tompkins came to Unity Hunt, the corporate office for the Lamar Hunt family and its business entities, in 2003, and expected to handle investment funds. He previously served in a similar capacity at Richmont Corp., representing some interests of the Mary Kay Ash family. He went to work on two funds Unity Hunt was actively managing and worked on a few sports-related matters. Sports fan Lamar Hunt owns the Kansas City Chiefs football team and three major-league soccer teams. Hunt Sports Group, one of the Unity companies, had just begun to acquire land for what would become Frisco Soccer & Entertainment Center. Construction was a year away. In short order, however, the project began to grow as fast as the area around it, and Tompkins found himself immersed in stadium-related contracts. The entertainment center quickly became two-thirds of his workload. The mountain of contracts with sponsors, vendors, building contractors, the U.S. Olympic Committee would have been higher without Tompkins, says John Wagner, president of Hunt Sports Group. Wagner credits Tompkins with setting up standard agreements that have saved time and paper, and for making those contracts rock solid. “He’s got certain issues that are relevant to the agreements that we’ve reached that he’ll stand very firm on. He’s usually pretty clear about when he feels that there’s a point that we cannot go beyond,” Wagner says. Harper is amazed at the smoothness of the process, as well. “I’ve been on standby for two years, thinking I was going to come in with the Frisco stadium. They managed to get a deal done, where I think anybody but Alan would have been tied up in litigation for months,” he says. The stadium, also known as Pizza Hut Park, opened on Aug. 6. When complete, it will feature 20,000 seats and 17 regulation soccer fields.
