One of Patton Boggs’ most prominent regulatory lawyers has opted to jump cross-town to Arnold & Porter. Daniel Kracov had been deputy director of Patton Boggs’ vaunted public policy and regulatory practice, but says that after 18 years with the firm it was time to make a change. Moving with Kracov is lobbyist Kathleen Means. Kracov says a number of factors led to the move, among them Patton Boggs’ representation of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, a group unpopular with his pharmaceutical clients. Kracov’s clients have included Pfizer Inc., Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., and Hoffman-LaRoche Inc. Patton Boggs’ eat-what-you-kill compensation system also appeared to play a role. “There were things about it I liked,” he says of the pay formula. “There were things I didn’t like.” Kracov is the third senior partner to leave the firm for a rival D.C. law office in the past year, but Patton Boggs managing partner Stuart Pape says there is no cause for alarm. “I think you get folks who get to a stage in their professional life where they have an itch and feel they need to scratch it,” he says.
