AAAA ELECTION Michele Zavos, a solo practitioner in Washington, D.C., and Maryland, was elected to the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys. Her practice focuses primarily on adoptions and estate planning.
HISPANIC NATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION Jimmie Reyna was elected president of the Hispanic National Bar Association. The nonprofit is a national voice for the Hispanic legal community, representing more than 25,000 Hispanic American attorneys, judges, law students, and law professors. Reyna is chair of the international trade and customs practice group at Williams Mullen.
LEVER AWARD The D.C. Law Students in Court program presented Georgetown law professor Wallace Mlyniec with the 2005 Lever Award. The award is given annually by the LSIC to recognize those who used legal tools to benefit the D.C. area. Mlyniec, Georgetown’s Lupo Ricci professor of clinical legal studies, was honored for his work with the school’s public service program.
NAACP AWARD O’Kelly McWilliams received the Fairfax County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Community Service Award. McWilliams, a partner with Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky and Popeo, was honored during the Annual Freedom Fund and Awards Banquet.
NDIA Ronald Perlman was elected to serve on the board of directors for the National Defense Industrial Association. Perlman heads Buchanan Ingersoll’s government contracts practice. The NDIA is a forum to discuss recent developments in technology and to influence the government’s national security policies.
PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD Robert Drinan received the 2005 Public Service Award from the International Law Section of the D.C. Bar. The award is given annually to recognize significant contributions to the field of international law. Drinan — a priest, scholar, lawyer, politician, activist, and ethicist — has been a professor at Georgetown University Law Center since 1981. He teaches classes on international human rights, constitutional law, civil liberties, legislation, and advanced legal ethics. He has been awarded 21 honorary degrees and worked as a visiting professor at four American universities. He also served as the dean of Boston College Law School.
RED CROSS AWARD Morgan, Lewis & Bockius received the Circle of Humanitarians Award from the American Red Cross for its contribution to the Tsunami Relief Fund. It is the highest annual philanthropic honor the Red Cross bestows.
SONNENSCHEIN NATH & ROSENTHAL Joshua Berman has been appointed the new local chair of the litigation and business regulation practice at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal. Berman’s expertise includes white-collar criminal litigation and investigations, Securities and Exchange Commission investigations, and complex civil litigation. He was recently named national co-chair of the American Bar Association’s White-Collar Crime Subcommittee on Public Corruption and Extortion. Before joining Sonnenschein, Berman was an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. — Nathan Carlile
