MERGER TO CREATE 160-ATTORNEY IP FIRM Merchant & Gould, an intellectual property law firm with five offices in the United States, and Welsh & Katz, a Chicago-based IP firm, have agreed in principle to merge, effective Jan. 1, 2006. The combined firm, Merchant Gould Welsh & Katz, will have more than 160 attorneys and six offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Minneapolis, Seattle and Washington, D.C. “It’s a year in the making,” said D. Randall King, managing director and CEO of Merchant & Gould, of the merger plans that began with his discussion with A. Sidney Katz, managing partner of Welsh & Katz, at an Association of Patent Law Firms meeting. Merchant & Gould, which has more than 110 attorneys, focuses exclusively on IP law, including patent, trademark, copyright, unfair competition, trade secret, interference, advertising, Internet and software and related litigation, including trials and appeals. The firm’s clients include individual inventors, emerging companies, Fortune 500 corporations, governmental bodies and academic institutions. The approximately 50-attorney Welsh & Katz’s client base includes corporations, universities and individuals involved in high-tech fields as well as the entertainment industry. In addition, the firm has an international practice, handling cases including patent, copyright and trademark infringement, theft of trade secrets and related claims. King said the new firm will draw on Welsh & Katz’s litigation strengths and its expertise in the chemical and biotech industries. — Law.com
