Judge David Sentelle of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit has been picked to head a new committee on judicial security. The 10-member committee will be chaired by Sentelle, who was chosen earlier this month, and will make policy recommendations to the Judicial Conference. The new committee was spurred by the killings early this spring of the mother and husband of a federal judge in Chicago, and the shooting deaths of a judge and two others in the Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta. Previously, security issues had been part of a larger committee that handled general oversight of courthouse facilities around the country. The U.S. Marshals Service, which is responsible for protecting the federal judiciary, recently started to offer judges security sweeps of their homes. Sentelle was not available to comment.
