DEPUTY DA ENTERS SANTA CLARA DA RACE Ending weeks of speculation, Deputy District Attorney James Shore filed papers with the Santa Clara County elections office Monday, officially declaring his candidacy for the 2006 DA race. “I know from my own experience that it is time for change at the district attorney’s office,” Shore said in a statement. “I am looking forward to a vigorous and substantive campaign in which I can articulate my experience as a crime fighter and my plan to protect all the people of our community.” Shore, who is serving his fifth term as president of the Santa Clara County Government Attorneys Association, joins a packed candidate field, which includes Chief Assistant DA Karyn Sinunu, Assistant DA Marc Buller and Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Dolores Carr. The primary for the county’s first DA’s race in 16 years is set for next June. A runoff will be held in November. “I am running for district attorney because I know [that] the best way to keep the families of Santa Clara County safe is to make sure our district attorney’s office is working effectively,” Shore said in his statement, released by e-mail Monday. Shore did not return a phone call seeking comment, and his statement didn’t give specific examples of changes he’d make to the office if elected top prosecutor. Shore’s statement, however, did say he wants to continue to make justice “our first and foremost goal,” adding that he wants to make sure the DA’s office is using “every tool and every available technology to protect the public. “We need a leader who understands that keeping neighborhoods safe means working with the community every night and every day,” Shore said in the e-mail. Julie O’Shea HOWREY RECRUITS FENWICK IP EXPERT Howrey has poached IP partner Henry Su from Fenwick & West. Su, who started in Howrey’s Menlo Park office last week, had been at Fenwick about 4 1/2 years. He is the kind of midlevel partner that Henry Bunsow, managing partner of Howrey’s Northern California offices, says his firm is trying to recruit. “We have been looking for young up-and-coming partners who can use the platform that we provide to get them to the next level in their career development,” Bunsow said. Howrey is primarily looking for partners with experience in IP, antitrust or commercial litigation. Su says that although he enjoyed working at Fenwick, with its deep Silicon Valley roots, he was attracted to Howrey’s global scope. Su, whose expertise is in antitrust and IP counseling, has represented Cisco Systems Inc., Intuit Inc., Compuware Corp. and what was then PalmOne Inc. Howrey opened its Menlo Park office in the early ’90s and its San Francisco office in October 2002. Bunsow says the firm now has about 60 lawyers in Northern California, double its number two years ago. Howrey hopes to double its ranks in Northern California again in the next two or three years, Bunsow said. Marie-Anne Hogarth
