Roscoe Howard Jr. was a hot item when he stepped down as U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia in Spring 2004. To the surprise of many, he was lured to the newly opened D.C. office of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton. “I believe we can build a fairly formidable group here,” Howard told Legal Times then. Indeed, Mark Nagle, former chief of the office’s civil division, and Daniel Seikaly, former criminal division chief, followed Howard to Sheppard’s 25-lawyer office. But last week, Howard, Nagle, Seikaly, and partner Nathan Muyskens announced they were leaving Sheppard, after just 15 months, for Troutman Sanders. The reason, Howard says: a large and unresolvable client conflict with one of Sheppard’s California offices. Neither Howard nor the firm would disclose the clients involved. “It’s big enough that we thought it would be best that we land somewhere else,” Howard says of his new client. “It’s a business decision, and we’re making it.” Says Sheppard’s D.C. managing partner Edward Schiff, “It’s a shame, because they’re really good people.”
