EVEN SMART LAWYER CAN’T MAKE CASE AGAINST DARWIN To the editor: Your Aug. 29 front-page article “Taking Darwin Down” leaves the unfortunate impression that there might be a decent case to be made against evolution, given that someone as intelligent and not obviously a religious crank as Edward Sisson is opposed. That would be a natural assumption, unless you are familiar with the concept of an idée fixe. A relative of mine, for example, was a whip-smart retired banker until the day he died in his late 90s, but on the subject of fluoride in the water, he was a lunatic. “It’s rat poison,” he would say, and decry any evidence otherwise as “biased.” He too believed that those who agreed with him were being persecuted for their views by a close-minded establishment, cutting off further discussion. Among the occasional intelligent critics of evolution, lawyers predominate for two reasons, probably. It takes a disciplined mind to maintain such a castle in the air. Also, law is one of the last professions where you can be illiterate in math and science and still make good money. Sisson’s views do not make opposition to evolution respectable. A.
