John Roberts Jr. was born in New York and lives in Maryland, but when he goes before the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday, he will be introduced by senators from Indiana and Virginia. What gives? Part of the answer may be that none of the senators from New York and Maryland are Republicans. But then again, one of his Indiana escorts is Democrat Evan Bayh, who will be joined by Republican Richard Lugar. Roberts grew up in Indiana. Bayh told the Indianapolis Star that Roberts asked him in a phone call Aug. 31. “I said absolutely,” Bayh reported. “My first reaction was, we’ve had too much incivility in Washington. Too much fussing and fighting. And if I’m asked to help try and correct some of that, I’m happy to try and do that.” But Bayh said he is not sure how he will vote on Roberts. Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) is Roberts’ other introducer. He once worked at Hogan & Hartson, Roberts’ old law firm.
