FORMER L.A. MAYOR JOINS BINGHAM FIRM Former Los Angeles Mayor and California Secretary of Education Richard Riordan joined the Los Angeles office of Bingham McCutchen on Tuesday. He joins the firm as of counsel and will focus on strategic client relationships. Riordan’s former law firm, Riordan & McKinzie, merged with Bingham McCutchen in 2003. “He has a great reputation, and he is as talented a lawyer and adviser as I’ve ever seen,” said Richard Welch, managing partner of 850-lawyer Bingham McCutchen. “Any time you have a person like that join you, you have to be overjoyed.” Riordan will likely take on an eclectic mix of projects from strategy issues to business development. “Basically I call myself a problem-solver,” said Riordan. “I look forward to having the best brains in the country to call on to help me solve problems.” He hopes to work with corporate transactions, especially with companies that are in trouble, he said. Riordan served as the mayor of Los Angeles from 1993 until 2001 and unsuccessfully ran for governor of California in 2002. Riordan & McKinzie was an 80-attorney firm that specialized in corporate transactions. The move joins Riordan with former California Gov. Pete Wilson, who started at Bingham as of counsel in 2004. Adva Saldinger
