Lockheed Martin Corp., the nation’s largest defense contractor, said Thursday that the second-ranking official at the Justice Department will become the company’s general counsel. Deputy Attorney General James Comey, 44, will join Lockheed in October, replacing Frank Menaker Jr., 65, as its top lawyer. Comey, who was appointed in 2003 by President Bush, said in April that he planned to leave the Justice Department in the fall. At Justice, he led the agency’s corporate fraud task force, overseeing the prosecution of firms such as WorldCom and Enron Corp. He had served earlier as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and handled the investigation of the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia while working at the U.S. attorney’s office in Virginia. Menaker, who has served as general counsel at Lockheed since March 1995, will retire at the end of January 2006. Lockheed also said the former deputy secretary of Homeland Security, James Loy, was elected to the company’s board of directors. Loy was also the first director of the Transportation Security Administration. Lockheed shares fell 13 cents to close at $62.82 Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange.
