SAN JOSE Things have turned ugly fast in the Santa Clara County district attorney race. A day after Ron Del Pozzo announced he would run in next year’s election, a hit-piece on the superior court judge landed on the Internet, warning voters not to “waste” their vote on a “Bozzo.” The site www.delpozzo4da.com was created by Deputy DA James Sibley, who said Thursday that he is merely saying out loud what everyone around the South Bay legal community is already thinking. “Ron is a very nice guy, but he was widely regarded as a mediocre and somewhat lazy deputy district attorney,” Sibley writes on the Web site. “From all accounts, he has followed suit on the bench, working short days and carrying a light caseload while focusing his energy on political activities.” Reached by phone Thursday morning, Del Pozzo said he hadn’t seen Sibley’s site because his Internet connection has been on the fritz, but he understands from friends that it is a scathing personal attack. “Obviously, I am very disappointed that he would say such stuff about me,” Del Pozzo said, adding that he had played host at Sibley’s bachelor party a few years ago and the families still exchange Christmas cards. “My prayers are with them. I prayed for them last night.” Del Pozzo, a 12-year prosecutor in the DA’s career criminal unit who won a seat on the bench in 2002, announced Monday that he was running for DA in what will be the county’s first contested race in 16 years. Chief Assistant DA Karyn Sinunu and Assistant DA Marc Buller have also thrown their hats in the ring. “I know things about Karyn Sinunu that would make reporters’ hair stand up. I know less about Marc Buller, but you’ll never see me take a dig at another candidate,” Del Pozzo said. Sibley’s Web site, adorned with an angry-looking clown puppet, includes a disclaimer that what is written is his own personal opinion and not something “sponsored, endorsed, supported or encouraged” by either Sinunu or Buller. Sibley also writes that he is not supporting nor endorsing any candidate for DA. “I thought somebody had to get up and shout,” Sibley said Thursday. “I didn’t think there was any room for subtlety.” Del Pozzo has called the Web site “mean-spirited,” adding, “it’s not going to change how I do my campaign.” Del Pozzo said he isn’t planning to talk with Sibley about why he launched the Web site, adding that it might come across as “intimidation.” “I’m a fair guy,” Del Pozzo said. “This is just what campaigns do. People just get vicious.” Indeed, the mudslinging started earlier this month when an “e-attack,” penned by Deputy DA Christopher Arriola who supports Buller accused Sinunu of not promoting diversity within the office. Sinunu immediately called the accusation “unfair” and “inaccurate.” Sinunu, Buller and Del Pozzo have all said they hope the DA’s race can maintain a level of civility and fairness. It would appear, however, that the office’s deputies see things differently.
