AMERICAN COLLEGE OF TRIAL LAWYERS The American College of Trial Lawyers has named three D.C.-area attorneys as fellows. Grayson Hanes, a partner at Reed Smith in Falls Church, Va., practices in the areas of general litigation and civil and criminal matters. Roger Spaeder, a partner in D.C.’s Zuckerman Spaeder, practices complex criminal and civil litigation. James Archibald, a partner at Venable, practices in the area of commercial litigation. Fellowship in the ACTL is extended by invitation only. Lawyers must have a minimum of 15 years trial experience before they can be considered. Members come from all branches of trial practice. There are currently 5,400 members in the United States and Canada. AMERICAN LAW INSTITUTE Jeff Senger, a lawyer at the Justice Department, has been elected to the American Law Institute, an organization dedicated to the improvement of the law. ALI membership is limited to 3,000 people and includes jurists, lawyers, and law professors from around the United States and internationally. Senger is senior counsel in the Office of the Associate Attorney General. INNOCENCE NETWORK NATIONAL CONFERENCE Jeffrey Kauffman and Alysa Zeltzer, both associates at Collier Shannon Scott, were honored at the 2005 Innocence Network National Conference in the District, hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project, a member of the Innocence Commission for Virginia. Kauffman and Zeltzer, along with lawyers from eight other firms, contributed pro bono legal assistance to secure the release of 11 wrongfully convicted individuals and helped to identify errors in the investigative or judicial process that led to the convictions. MCDERMOTT WILL & EMERY Raphael “Ray” Lupo has been named head of McDermott Will & Emery’s intellectual property, media, and technology department. Lupo, who chaired the department from 1996 to 2002, succeeds Jack Lever, who has led the 175-lawyer department for the past three years.
