In March, Mikal Watts won $31 million in damages from Ford Motor Co. on behalf of four victims of a fatal car crash-just another win in a stretch of lawsuit victories. According to firm records, Watts has guided 10 lawsuits to verdicts that exceeded $10 million over the course of his career, and this was his second victory against Ford Motor Co. He also won a $18 million verdict for victims of a rollover accident in Texas. In 2001, Watts won a $13.7 million verdict in Rodriguez v. Bridgestone/Firestone. The recovery marked a litigation milestone: It was one of the first cases to win in court when Bridgestone/Firestone tires were recalled, and the case propelled Watts’ self-made firm into the spotlight. Since 2002, Watts won two startling verdicts that earned him national headlines. He first won a jury award against the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. that settled for $143 million. Following that award, he went to court for a client who was paralyzed when her abusive husband shoved her off a balcony. The husband is in prison for the crime, but had inherited money from his wealthy father. Watts performed the case pro bono, and won a jury award of nearly $144 million. Watts’ cases have spanned medical, automobile, manufacturing and oil companies, and his stretch of wins has earned this lawyer his second consecutive appearance on this list, the first being in 2002.
