James Tanner Jr. has skills in the legal game. He specializes in sports law and is a certified agent for players in the National Basketball Association, the Women’s National Basketball Association and the National Football League. In 2004 alone, he negotiated more than $150 million in NBA contracts. NBA stars Tim Duncan, Grant Hill, Ray Allen and Josh Childress, WNBA stars Chamique Holdsclaw, Tamika Catchings and Alana Beard, and Olympic gold medalist Dominique Dawes are included on Tanner’s impressive clientele list, along with numerous professional sports teams’ executives. He recently represented Hill in acquiring 13 pieces of artwork by artist Romare Bearden and in Hill’s two-year art exhibit tour that featured more than 45 pieces in the NBA star’s collection of African-American art. Tanner also represented Josh Childress, the sixth pick in the 2004 NBA player-entry draft, in all aspects of his career, from Childress’ contract negotiation to his endorsement deals with Nike Inc. and ESPN Video Games. Tanner represented clients in $20 million worth of investments and real estate actions in 2004. In 1996, Tanner held a senior position in the Clinton-Gore presidential campaign. He is a founding member of Doing Well and Good, a charitable organization based in Washington that raises money for groups like the Hoop Dreams Foundation.
