Courtland Reichman is a partner in the home office of King & Spalding, maintaining an impressive list of clients that includes Wendy’s International Inc., United Parcel Service Inc. and Home Depot Inc. In January of this year, Reichman defended Coca-Cola Co. in a federal patent infringement lawsuit involving vending machine design. Just one week later, Reichman argued the prison-sentencing case Johnson v. U.S. in front of the U.S. Supreme Court (ultimately losing his appeal in a 5-4 decision). This case was part of the average 500 pro bono hours Reichman logs every year. His pro bono work focuses on prison abuses and fair treatment for convicts including two imprisoned clients, a murderer and a drug dealer. When he graduated from college, he worked as an associate economist at the Rand Corp., publishing articles and a book about labor economics. He graduated from Emory University School of Law in 1995. Reichman joined King & Spalding in 1996, arguing his first case before the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals as a first-year associate. He also created an indigent defense team at his firm, bringing together 50 volunteers to aid the overtaxed public defender system in northern Georgia. A board member of the Southern Center for Human Rights and the Living Room, Reichman also won the Anti-Defamation League’s Young Lawyer’s Award in 2001.
