Karen Barth Menzies is a leading anti-depressant drug products liability attorney. She has stepped up her fight in the past few years, advocating that pharmaceutical companies should warn about the alleged risks of anti-depressant drugs. She is the lead attorney on dozens of cases involving suicide or violence caused by anti-depressants. Menzies filed the first Paxil-withdrawal class action against GlaxoSmithKline PLC in 2001. Since then, she has filed similar cases, both class action and individual death cases, in more than 25 states. Menzies was appointed as lead counsel for national class action cases in In re Paxil Products Liability Litigation in April 2004, the first of which is set for trial this summer. She also co-defended in South Carolina a boy who was convicted of killing his grandparents and sentenced to 30 years in prison. Menzies alleged that the boy was suffering an adverse reaction to the anti-depressant Zoloft, and is currently appealing the verdict. The boy had started taking Zoloft three weeks before the killings. It was the first criminal case that used an anti-depressant defense. In 2004, Menzies testified three times before the Food and Drug Administration and met with members of the House of Representatives and Senate to warn about the risks of anti-depressants, and was frequently asked to lecture and write on the topic.
