San Francisco Bay Area Legal Aid, a group providing free civil legal services, has hired several new attorneys for its San Francisco and satellite offices. In San Francisco, Genevieve Richardson, a 2000 graduate of the University of Colorado School of Law, was hired to be director of pro bono activities; and Betsy Lee, a 2002 graduate of the University of San Francisco School of Law, was hired as a staff attorney. Five more attorneys were hired in the group’s Contra Costa, San Mateo and Alameda regional offices: Susun Kim, a 1991 graduate of New York University School of Law; Maureen Lainez, a 2000 graduate of University of Washington School of Law; Mirissa McMurray, a 2003 graduate of Hastings College of the Law; Melody Saint-Saens, a 2003 graduate of the University of Miami School of Law; and Steven Weiss, a 1998 graduate of Golden Gate University School of Law. Shook, Hardy & Baconwas honored by Pets Are Wonderful Support — a nonprofit group which provides animal companions to people suffering from HIV/AIDS or other debilitating illnesses — for the firm’s pro bono representation of the group and its clients. East Bay Walnut Creek firm Archer Norrishas hired land-use expert Victor Marquezas of counsel. Marquez, who focuses on real estate transactions, private and public finance and general civil litigation, received his J.D. from Santa Clara University in 1990. The firm also added two associates to the Walnut Creek office: Sonny Lee, a 2001 graduate of UC Davis’ King Hall School of Law, and Kris Jacobsen, a 1998 graduate of University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law. Another land-use expert was hired by a Walnut Creek firm. Patricia Curtinhas joined Morgan Miller Blair, where she will advise clients in land-use entitlement, planning, zoning and environmental matters. Curtin earned her J.D. from McGeorge School of Law. Southern California The Los Angeles office of Major, Hagen & Africahas hired Courtney Goldsteinas its new managing director. Goldstein, whose practice focuses on foreclosures, bankruptcy and commercial litigation, received her J.D. from the University of Buffalo School of Law in 2000. Bryan Caveis bringing on four new lawyers — two partners and two counsel — in its Los Angeles office. The partners are Evan Chuck, an international transactions expert who earned his J.D. from George Washington University Law School in 1993, and David Stepp, whose practice spans a variety of customs and international trade issues and who earned his J.D. from the University of Georgia in 1986. The counsel are Katherine McDaniel, a 1980 graduate of UCLA School of Law, and Nicole Janigian Simonian, a 1998 graduate of Loyola Law School. Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Grahamhas launched a new practice focusing on the use of California’s unfair competition law. K&LNG lawyers representing clients in California UCL disputes will require in-depth knowledge of both the statute and class-action litigation, according to Los Angeles partner Michael Mallow .
