Boalt Hall School of Law professor Adrian Kragen, an internationally known tax law expert, died over the weekend. He was 97. Kragen, who retired from teaching in 1994, got his law degree at Boalt in 1934. He went to work as a deputy attorney general under Earl Warren and eventually joined Los Angeles’ Loeb & Loeb. Kragen represented several Hollywood studios, but left the high-paying work to join the faculty at his alma mater in 1952, according to a profile that was published in 1998 in UC Berkeley’s alumni magazine, California Monthly. Kragen became well known for his work on tax law, helping to write a textbook on the subject and even working on legislation. “I’ve been very, very lucky,” Kragen told the magazine. “I had a very happy marriage. With my children and grandchildren, I’ve escaped the problems that you hear so much about these days. And I’ve had a fascinating career. I’ve never been able to understand why other people didn’t have as much fun as I did with tax law. I’ve always found it very interesting. In fact, I’ve always found everything I’ve done interesting.” He is survived by his son Ken, daughter Robin Merritt, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A public memorial service is planned at 4 p.m. on April 8 in the courtyard at Boalt Hall.
