BAKER & MCKENZIE GETS 1 FROM SHEARMAN Baker & McKenzie has landed a lawyer from Shearman & Sterling’s San Francisco office. Emery Mitchell, who was of counsel at Shearman, joined Baker’s San Francisco office earlier this month as a partner in the firm’s corporate securities group. “We had him across the table in a substantial transaction and were impressed by him,” said Peter Engstrom, who heads Baker’s San Francisco and Palo Alto offices. He couldn’t reveal the deal but said it was a “multijurisdictional divestiture in the high-tech sector.” Mitchell represented one of the acquirers of the client’s divested assets. Baker lawyers say Mitchell brings to the table client relationships and connections in the investment banking industry. He represents public and private companies in joint ventures, M&A and dispositions of companies and assets. Mitchell’s recent work includes representing chip maker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. in a $630 million Series C preferred stock financing and its acquisition of a wafer fabrication facility and related assets from Motorola Inc. He had worked at Shearman & Sterling in New York and San Francisco since 1994. “We continue to build up our corporate securities practice in Northern California,” Engstrom said. “[Mitchell] is the real deal and consistent with our ongoing effort to add top talent.” — Marie-Anne Hogarth
