AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION Georgetown University Law Center students placed first and third at the fourth annual American Bar Association’s Law Student Tax Challenge in San Diego on Jan. 21. Brian Judkins and Dan McCall claimed the top honor, and Atim Nsunwara and Soyun Park came in third. Jason Dutil and James Kinnebrew from George Washington University Law School were semifinalists. Also, Georgetown Law’s Judkins and McCall won the ABA’s prize for “Best Written Submission.” The ABA Law Student Tax Challenge is one of the nation’s largest tax competitions for law students and involves tax planning and client-counseling exercises designed to reflect everyday tax practice. The judges included some of the top practitioners and tax experts in the country. The winners were chosen from 44 two-person teams. MEXICAN ORDER OF THE AGUILA AZTECA Mexican President Vicente Fox awarded John Bruton of international consultants Manatt Jones Global Strategies (a wholly owned subsidiary of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips) the Mexican Order of the Aguila Azteca, in recognition of Bruton’s interest in strengthening commerce and investment between Mexico and the United States. The medal is the highest honor that the Mexican government can bestow upon a foreign national. Previous American recipients include President Dwight Eisenhower, former Gov. Ann Richards of Texas, Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut, Cesar Chavez, David Rockefeller, Leonard Bernstein, and several U.S. ambassadors to Mexico. Bruton serves as senior managing director of the firm’s Mexico City office and as an international strategic consultant; his focus is on business facilitation with U.S. corporations overseas and assisting foreign corporations and governments in D.C. and elsewhere in the United States. NORTH COLUMBIA HEIGHTS CIVIC ASSOCIATION Larry Ray was elected president of the North Columbia Heights Civic Association. The association promotes economic and community development in the D.C. neighborhood. Ray is a private mediation/arbitration practitioner. He teaches negotiation at George Washington University Law School. WASHINGTON METROPOLITCAN AREA CORPORATE COUNSEL ASSOCIATION Marian Block, vice president and associate general counsel of the Lockheed Martin Corp., has begun her tenure as president of the Washington Metropolitan Area Corporate Counsel Association. WMACCA is a professional association for in-house counsel in Washington, D.C., suburban Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Block began her term as president at WMACCA’s annual meeting, held in January.
