Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger filled a slew of bench vacancies around the state Wednesday, announcing appointments of 11 judges in four counties. The governor’s picks include six Republicans and five Democrats. Four are prosecutors, three are superior court commissioners, and three are civil litigators in private practice. For Sacramento County Superior Court, the governor appointed Laurie Earl, 43, a Democrat from Sacramento, and Alan Perkins, 56, a Republican from Davis. Earl, a Lincoln Law School graduate, is an internal investigator for the State Office of Inspector General. Perkins, a King Hall School of Law at UC-Davis graduate, has served for the past 30 years as a business defense litigator and bankruptcy attorney at Wilke, Fleury, Hoffelt, Gould & Birney in Sacramento. Schwarzenegger’s appointees to the Los Angeles County Superior Court include Eleanor Hunter, 43, a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles. Hunter, a Democrat, is a University of La Verne College of Law graduate. Also in L.A., the governor named Democrat Michael Levanas, 55, a court commissioner from Pacific Palisades and a Rutgers University law school graduate; Republican Scott Millington, 44, an L.A. deputy DA from Manhattan Beach who graduated from UCLA School of Law; and Dorothy Reyes, 52, a Pasadena Democrat and Loyola Law School graduate whose law firm specializes in insurance defense. Schwarzenegger’s two appointees to the San Bernardino County Superior Court bench include Jon Ferguson, 42, a University of San Diego School of Law graduate and Democrat who has served as a San Bernardino County deputy DA since 1989. He is a resident of Rancho Cucamonga. The governor also tapped Raymond Haight III, a 55-year-old Laguna Beach resident and San Bernardino County Superior Court commissioner assigned to juvenile court. Haight, a Republican, earned his law degree from California Western School of Law. The governor appointed three Republicans to the bench in Fresno County. They are: Donald Franson Jr., 53, of Fresno, a Hastings College of the Law graduate and civil attorney in private practice; David Kalemkarian, 42, of Fresno, a court commissioner and Boalt Hall School of Law graduate; and Jeffrey Hamilton Jr., 40, of Clovis, a deputy DA who graduated from Santa Clara University School of Law. This was Schwarzenegger’s third round of judicial appointments since taking office 15 months ago. In the earlier rounds, he named four appeal court justices and five superior court judges in San Mateo, San Diego and Merced counties.
