ORRICK OPENS OFFICE FOR LAWYERS IN TAIPEI Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe has opened an office in Taipei, Taiwan — the firm’s second office in Asia and its 14th office worldwide. The office, which will be known as Orrick Foreign Legal Affairs Attorneys at Law, will be staffed with lawyers from Silicon Valley who spend part of their time in Taiwan. Firm Chairman Ralph Baxter Jr. said the model was a departure from Orrick’s other offices, which are staffed with full-time lawyers. Lawyers at the office will assist Orrick’s Taiwanese clients, counseling them on their IP rights and obligations under U.S. law and representing them in IP litigation in the United States. Other work may include assisting Taiwanese businesses in cross-border finance and corporate work. The move doesn’t rule out the possibility that Orrick may open an office in mainland China. “We are actively considering opening in mainland China, and we have been for some time,” Baxter said. “This step is compatible with that and will help us continue to grow our understanding of Asia and China’s economic markets, the technology sector and other issues of culture and commerce that will assist us in our evaluation.” Orrick recently achieved a major litigation victory at the trial court level on behalf of Taiwan-based Compal Electronics, one of the largest original equipment computer manufacturers in the world. The plaintiff, LG Electronics, had asserted six patents against Compal and four other Taiwanese manufacturers of notebook computers. The firm also acted as transactional counsel for Chinatrust Commercial Bank, structuring and closing the first residential mortgage securitization to receive approval from Taiwanese regulatory authorities and to be registered for public offering under Taiwan’s securities law. In November 1999, Orrick formed a joint enterprise with a Japanese firm in Tokyo, and in 2003 those offices became known as Orrick Tokyo Law Offices. Orrick’s Tokyo office has about 25 attorneys concentrating on corporate work, real estate transactions, securitization and commercial matters, among other areas. — Marie-Anne Hogarth

New Partners

NEW MPS SHARE THE HELM AT MUNGER, TOLLES Munger, Tolles & Olson has appointed new managing partners and a brand new class of partners. Taking the firm’s reins are partners Mark Helm and Bart Williams. The pair, who will serve a three-year term through 2007, were elected unanimously as the firm’s new leaders. They replace R. Gregory Morgan and Robert Johnson, who had served as co-managing partners for the past eight years. Williams, whose practice focuses on complex civil litigation, will be the firm’s first African-American managing partner. Helm, a litigation partner since 1988, has represented numerous national law firms in professional negligence cases. The firm also adds five new partners to its ranks this year — the same number it promoted last year. In the firm’s San Francisco office, Rohit Singla, 34, a litigator, was named partner. He received his J.D. in 1998 from Harvard Law School. Munger also named four new partners in its Los Angeles office. They are Tamerlin Godley, James Rutten, Richard St. John and J. Martin Willhite. All the changes were effective Jan. 1. — Marie-Anne Hogarth
