I was a bit perturbed by the one-sided and ill-researched article that appeared in Friday’s [Nov. 12] edition of The Recorder, titled “The Extortion Factor.” It became evident after several paragraphs that the article’s authors were less interested in discussing the legal issues that surrounded [Bill] O’Reilly’s recent deprivation of good judgment, than on fashioning an attack on O’Reilly and the Fox News Channel. In what can only be deemed an example of poor lawyering skills, the authors seem content to accept as fact the accusations contained in [Andrea] Mackris’ complaint. This mistake, however, becomes the predicate upon which the rest of their subsequent ravings rest. The fact is the public never became privy to the content of those tapes, or the specific circumstances of the incident. With this in mind, I can hardly concede that filing a counterclaim for extortion is without merit. In the end I was left with little from this article other than bloated rhetoric and feminist shibboleths. Matthew C. Kelly Oakland
