I am increasingly uncomfortable with the media’s insistence on labeling conservative or fundamentalist legal groups only as “Christian.” In two recent articles, “Christian legal groups win party status in marriage cases” (10/18) and “Lockyer sticks to tradition in marriage brief” (10/11) you have referred to “Christian legal groups.” I hope it does not come as a surprise to you or your readers that there are Christian lawyers and Christian legal groups that are progressive and stand in solidarity with our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters in their fight for equal rights to marry, join the military, be members of clergy, etc. To consistently refer to “Christian legal groups” as only those who support the bigotry reflected in California’s “defense” of marriage act ignores the fact that Christians as a group are not of one mind on the issue. For example, my firm practices church law representing Christian clergy, congregations and denominations, and we openly advocate for the equal rights of all individuals to marry. It would be loathsome and misleading to us if we were somehow lumped together with the “Christian legal groups” such as the Alliance Defense Fund and Liberty Counsel. Christianity should not be automatically equated with conservatism or fundamentalism. Susan Griffin San Francisco
