Barry Wayne Homer, a 20-year partner at Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison, died Friday following a yearlong battle with melanoma. He was 54. “Barry was one of those rare people who was always thinking of the good of the firm and those he worked with,” said Franklin “Brock” Gowdy, who in 1975 recruited Homer out of the University of Chicago Law School. Homer, a nationally recognized expert in employee benefits, moved to Morgan, Lewis & Bockius after Brobeck’s collapse in 2003. Gowdy, now the managing partner of Morgan, Lewis’ San Francisco office, said Homer excelled in his early career in working through the intricacies of the 1974 Employee Retirement Income Security Act. Homer was later selected as an initial member of the American Bar Association Committee on Employee Benefits and subsequently elected into the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel. Even amid Brobeck’s collapse, Gowdy said, Homer made time for colleagues who came to him with retirement-plan questions. “He was a real gentleman and a person who cared about the institution and its values,” Gowdy said. Homer is survived by his wife, Donna Homer; two sons, Ryan and Christopher; brother William; nephews Nathan and Austin; and cousin Orvella Pamp. There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday at Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church, 49 Knox Drive, Lafayette, with a reception following at the church’s Fellowship Hall. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to: The Melanoma Research Foundation, 24 Old Georgetown Road, Princeton, N.J. 08540.
