What is the best way to build your career? Network, network, network. Lawrence Tu, the new senior vice president and general counsel of Dell Corporation Limited, has done that literally — and figuratively. He was previously executive vice president and GC of the peacock network, NBC Universal, Inc. In August, Tu started work at the Round Rock, Texasbased PC giant. He replaces Thomas Green, Dell’s general counsel since 1994, who announced his intention to step down a year ago. Green led the search for his successor and will continue to advise the company. The job change meant relocation from Rye, New York, for the 49-year-old Tu and his wife and two children. But the move is hardly the farthest one he has made. Before joining NBC, Tu spent five years as managing partner of the Hong Kong office of O’Melveny & Myers. He took a hiatus from the firm in 1994 to serve in Hong Kong as general counsel for the Asia-Pacific region of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. Tu was set to recruit and manage a 14-person group there but was dropped in 1995, when Goldman cut back its original expansion plans. Although Tu declined to discuss how he learned about the Dell position, it should be noted that in addition to his networking skills, he has a sterling resume. A Rhodes Scholar, Tu graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School and clerked for U.S. Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall. He also worked as an attorney for the U.S. Department of State.
