AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION Carl Cooper, chief diversity officer for Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, has been appointed to the ABA’s President’s Council on Diversity. Its mission is to increase ethnic and racial diversity within the legal profession. Cooper will assist fellow members as they work with various programs and entities to increase opportunities and retention for people of color from law school to the bench. AMERICAN COLLEGE OF FAMILY LAW TRIAL LAWYERS Philip Schwartz, of counsel at Odin, Feldman & Pittleman, has been elected as a diplomate of the American College of Family Law Trial Lawyers. Membership in the college is limited to 100 lawyers nationwide, and Schwartz is the only lawyer from Virginia with the distinction. BEFORE COLUMBUS FOUNDATION David Cole, professor at Georgetown University Law Center, has received the American Book Award for Enemy Aliens, which discusses the curtailment of civil liberties after Sept. 11. The Before Columbus Foundation established the American Book Awards in 1978 as an alternative to the National Book Awards, recognizing the achievements of American authors in a variety of genres.
