AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION Thomas Spahn, a partner at McGuireWoods, has been appointed to the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility. The committee is responsible for writing legal ethics opinions that state the ABA’s position on lawyers’ ethical responsibilities. COUNCIL OF APPELLATE LAWYERS Charles Cole, a partner at Steptoe & Johnson, was elected chairman of the Council of Appellate Lawyers. The council is part of the American Bar Association Judicial Division Appellate Judges Conference. It is the first national appellate bench-bar organization in the country. MARLBOROUGH INN OF COURT Sandy Baron, a partner at Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy & Ecker, has been elected president of the Marlborough Inn of Court. The organization provides judges, lawyers, and law students an opportunity to develop a deeper sense of professionalism and to further the practice of law. WASHINGTON LAWYERS’ COMMITTEE Lewis Wiener, a partner at Sutherland Asbill & Brennan, has been elected to the board of directors of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. The committee represents both individuals and groups seeking to vindicate their civil rights.
