New partners Manatt, Phelps & Phillips (Los Angeles): Valentin G. Aguilar II joins the real estate and land use group in the firm’s home office. He was previously in the Los Angeles office of New York’s Dewey Ballantine. Laterals Allen Matkins Leck Gamble & Mallory (Los Angeles): Amy Wintersheimer Findley joins the labor and employment practice as partner in the firm’s San Diego office. She was previously a partner at Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich. Baker & McKenzie: J. Todd Culwell joins the global major projects group as partner in the firm’s Houston office. An energy transaction lawyer, he was previously a partner at Houston’s Andrews & Kurth. Bryan Cave: John C. Peirce joins the antitrust/U.S. trade regulation and commercial litigation client service groups as partner in the firm’s Washington office. Coudert Brothers (New York): John Chrisman, former head of Jones Day’s mergers & acquisitions and capital markets practices in the Asia/Pacific region, joins the firm’s Hong Kong office, but will transfer to the Sydney office at the end of the year. Cole, partner in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson, has been elected chairman of the 600-member Council of Appellate Lawyers, a part of the American Bar Association Judicial Division’s Appellate Judges Conference and the first national appellate bench-bar organization in the nation. Appointed Evett Simmons, partner at Ruden, McClosky, Smith, Schuster & Russell of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has been appointed chair of the ABA president’s advisory council on diversity in the profession. Raymond I. Skilling, senior advisor to Aon Corp. in Chicago, has been appointed chairman of the board of overseers of the RAND Corp.’s Institute for Civil Justice.
