AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ADOPTION ATTORNEYS Mark McDermott, a partner at Joseph, McDermott & Reiner, has been reappointed as the legislative chair for the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys. In this capacity, he will work to forward the academy’s goals on both the state and federal levels. AMERICAN IMMIGRANT LAWYERS ASSOCIATION Christopher Nugent, senior counsel and administrator of Holland & Knight’s Community Services Team, was the recipient of the third annual Daniel Levy Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement in Immigration Law. Nugent received the award for his pro bono litigation and public policy work on behalf of immigrants and refugees. ASSISTANT U.S. ATTORNEYS ASSOCIATION D.C. Superior Court Judge Noel Kramer was the recipient of the Robert A. Shuker Memorial Award. The annual award is presented to a former assistant U.S. attorney who has made a distinguished contribution to the administration of justice. Judge Kramer was recognized for her work improving court operations and for the creation of community courts in the District. BAR ASSOCIATION OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA Arnold & Porter received the 2004 Constance L. Belfiore Quality of Life Award. The firm was honored for its on-site children’s center, adoption expense reimbursement plan, associate bonus structure, and part-time work policy. INTERNATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION John Townsend, head of Hughes Hubbard & Reed’s arbitration and alternative dispute resolution practice group, has been named chair of the International Bar Association’s new Mediation Committee. The committee will have its inaugural meeting in October. IRS ADVISORY COMMITTEE Suzanne Ross McDowell, partner in the tax practice group of Steptoe & Johnson, has been named to the IRS Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt and Government Entities. The committee provides input on relevant issues concerning tax-exempt and government entities. MINORITY CORPORATE COUNSEL ASSOCIATION The association presented the D.C. office of Arnold & Porter with the 2004 Thomas L. Sager Award. The award is given to law firms that have demonstrated sustained commitment to improve the hiring, retention, and promotion of minority attorneys. This is the sixth consecutive year that Arnold & Porter has received this award. NATIONAL JUDICIAL COLLEGE Thomas Susman, a partner at Ropes & Gray, has been appointed to the National Judicial College’s Board of Trustees.
