CLIFFORD CHANCE PARTNER JOINS COOLEY Clifford Chance is losing antitrust partner Craig Waldman to Cooley Godward. Waldman, who is set to join Cooley’s Palo Alto office June 14, said the firm’s technology clients would fit well with his practice. “I’m an M&A adviser and regulatory antitrust lawyer,” Waldman said. “With the kind of work they have available it was a perfect fit with my skill set.” Waldman moved from Clifford Chance’s New York office to San Francisco when the firm set up shop in California in 2002, with the hiring of a group of lawyers from the now-defunct Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison. The group gave London’s Clifford Chance additional offices in Los Angeles, Palo Alto and San Diego. The California offices now have 70 lawyers. Clifford Chance has lost a string of high-profile partners in New York, and rumors have recently circulated in the legal community that the securities litigation group in California was looking to leave. A 1993 graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, Waldman began his career at the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Competition, working in one of the agency’s merger enforcement groups. He later joined New York’s Rogers & Wells, which subsequently merged with Clifford Chance. — Brenda Sandburg
