Eva Rodriguez, executive editor of Legal Times since 1999, will become the paper’s editor in chief May 23. Rodriguez is succeeding Rich Barbieri, who has been named New York news editor for the Associated Press. Barbieri, 41, has been Legal Times’ top editor since 1999. In her new position, Rodriguez will direct all aspects of the paper’s editorial coverage. She will also oversee Legal Times’ sister publication, Influence, which covers the business of lobbying. Barbieri, who since 1987 has worked at American Lawyer Media publications in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and New York, expanded the scope of Legal Times’ coverage during his five-year tenure. He launched Influence, which includes a newsletter, magazine, and Web-based information service on lobbying; added sections to Legal Times on local law and in-house counsel; and created the paper’s Web site, www.legaltimes.com. During his tenure, the paper garnered dozens of awards for editorial excellence. “ Legal Times is fortunate to have had editorial leadership of such high quality from Rich and now Eva,” says Ann Pelham, publisher of Legal Times and Influence. “Our community of readers, both in the Washington area and around the country, expects Legal Times to deliver smart, original reporting. Rich has more than delivered for five years. “We wish Rich all the best in his new role at the Associated Press in New York City, where he has many ties to family and friends,” Pelham says. “We appreciate his dedication, his creativity, and his passion for the news.” A former Justice Department correspondent for the The Wall Street Journal, Rodriguez, 42, has held a variety of editorial positions at Legal Times and its parent company, American Lawyer Media. She started her journalism career at ALM’s Miami Daily Business Review in 1988 after graduating from the University of South Florida. Two years later, Rodriguez moved to a reporting position at the The Miami Herald. In 1992, Rodriguez joined Legal Times as a federal courts reporter and eventually covered the U.S. Supreme Court as the paper’s news editor. In the mid-1990s, she also appeared as a Supreme Court correspondent for Court TV, then owned by the same company as Legal Times. After a stint at the Journal, Rodriguez returned to Miami in 1998 to become the Daily Business Review‘s managing editor. A year later, she rejoined Legal Times as executive editor. “I hope to build upon a long tradition of excellence at Legal Times and Influence,” says Rodriguez, “ and I’m very fortunate to work with an extremely talented group of colleagues in all facets of the newsroom.”
