William D. Auxer of Kaplin Stewart Meloff Reiter & Stein was a co-presenter at a workshop seminar on Pennsylvania’s New Fill Policy on Tuesday, April 13, in Harrisburg. The seminar was conducted as part of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry’s 2004 annual environmental laws and regulations conference.

Lorena E. Ahumada, Robert R. Baron Jr., David S. Fryman and Brian D. Pedrow, lawyers in the litigation department at Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, served as panelists at the 10th annual Northeast Regional Employment Law Institute sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Institute on April 15 and 16. Pedrow, an attorney in the labor and employment law group, also served on the planning committee for the conference.

Baron, a member of the intellectual property group, and Fryman, a member of the labor and employment law group, presented “Trade Secrets and Restrictive Covenants: Keep Your Secrets Safe and Your Employees Honest.” Pedrow and Ahumada, also of the labor and employment law group, presented “HIPAA Privacy Rules and Their Impact on Labor and Employment Laws.”

Theodore J. Kobus III of Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin will speak at a seminar hosted by Lorman Education Services in Lancaster on July 16. Kobus’ seminar is on construction management and design in Pennsylvania. Kobus is a shareholder in the firm’s Philadelphia office. He concentrates his practice in defending architects and engineers, construction defects, and professional liability matters.

Capehart Scatchard attorneys Prudence M. Higbee and Robert T. Lewis recently participated in a HIPAA Privacy Regulations and Workers’ Compensation in New Jersey seminar sponsored by Lorman Education Services. Higbee provided a workers’ compensation background, including exclusive remedy issues, types of claims and how employers may effectively handle investigation. Lewis provided an overview of the Medicare Secondary Payer Act and its impact on settlements. Both Higbee and Lewis represent employers, self-insured companies and insurance carriers in workers’ compensation defense matters.

Stephen R. Chitwood, an expert in management and leadership training for government attorney managers, has joined Altman Weil Inc. as an adjunct consultant. Chitwood will consult to law firms, corporate law departments and government legal agencies, with a particular emphasis on government law offices.

Dilworth Paxson partner Richard Fox has been appointed to the board of directors of the Biotechnology Foundation, a Pennsylvania-based nonprofit corporation that funds research and development of plant-based vaccines against diseases of world concern, including the development of vaccines and biomedical materials against such diseases as HIV, smallpox, anthrax, and SARS. Fox’s legal practice at the firm involves a broad range of tax areas, including nonprofit organizations, corporations, partnerships and individuals, as well as trusts and estates.
