New partners Clifford Chance: The firm’s new U.S. partnership class consists of Frank C. Cimino (litigation and dispute resolution) and Jay Gavigan and Kate McCarthy (banking and financial restructuring). Cimino and McCarthy are resident in Washington; Gavigan is based in New York. Hancock & Estabrook (Syracuse, N.Y.): Joseph T. Mancuso (business and corporate law) and John G. Powers (civil litigation) have risen to partnership status. Hill Farrer & Burrill (Los Angeles): Julia Birkel, John Byrne and Stacey Sullivan have been voted into the partnership. Birkel focuses on intellectual property and legal malpractice defense; Byrne’s practice centers around estate planning, trusts and probate administration; and Sullivan specializes in real estate. Laterals Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld: The firm’s project and infrastructure group has added three former Vinson & Elkins attorneys. Douglas B. Glass, an energy project and finance law specialist, will be a partner in London. Artem V. Faekov and Alexey L. Condratchik, both senior counsel, will join Akin Gump in Moscow. Arnold & Porter (Washington): Securities and commercial litigator H. Peter Haveles Jr. has joined the New York office as a partner. He has practiced extensively before federal courts as well as the New York and American stock exchanges, the New York Commodity Exchange, the New York Mercantile Exchange and the National Futures Association. Cozen O’Connor (Philadelphia): The firm has expanded its Washington presence through its acquisition of Asbill Moffitt & Boss (Washington), a firm noted for high-profile, complex criminal litigation. Henry W. Asbill, William B. Moffitt and Barry Boss join as senior members, along with Peter Paris, an associate. Greenberg Traurig: The firm’s Washington office has added Mark L. Hogge (shareholder) and Kathryn L. Clune (of counsel). Hogge, formerly of Dorsey & Whitney, has extensive experience in complex civil litigation. Clune, also plucked from Dorsey & Whitney, focuses on intellectual property and complex litigation. Nixon Peabody: Mitchell A. Stearn is a new partner in the firm’s business litigation and insurance practice groups, based in Washington. Associate Kevin M. Grace joins him in the move. Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler (New York): The firm has acquired the 11-member real estate practice from Bingham McCutchen. New partners include Robert M. Safron, Andrew L. Herz, Kenneth L. Sankin, Rhonda E. Schwartz and Hugh J. Freund. Lawrence P. Lenzner and Russell G. Wohl come aboard as counsel. Associates Kerri L. Alessi, Heidi M. Flinn, Golda R. Poretsky and Angie M. Sullivan round out the group. Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker (Los Angeles): Partner Toshiyuki Arai will spearhead the firm’s Japan-China practice, with an emphasis on working closely with Japanese clients in their activities in China. Accompanied by associate Yukiko Masuda, Arai will shift between the Beijing and Shanghai, China, offices. Seyfarth Shaw (Chicago): Kenneth R. Dolin has signed on with the labor and employment law firm, to be based in the home office. He arrives from Jenner & Block (Chicago), where he served as chairman of the labor practice. Dolin specializes in labor negotiations. Firm management Holland & Knight: Charles Welch “Chad” Tiedemann is the new head of the firm’s real estate section, which has more than 200 lawyers. He is a 20-year veteran in the areas of commercial real estate development and finance. White & Case: The election of the firm’s managing partner and management board has yielded the following results: Duane D. Wall, managing partner; William F. Wynne Jr., board chairman; and board members Kevin F. Barnard, Eric L. Berg, Timothy B. Goodell, Eberhard Meincke, Gilles Peigney, H. Philip T. Stopford and Hugh Verrier. New office Proskauer Rose (New York): The firm has opened an office, its seventh, in Boston. Leading the office will be partners Joseph A. Caparo Jr. and Steven M. Bauer, along with senior counsel Daniel J. Bernstein. All three previously were partners at Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault (Boston). Honored Kelly Frels, managing partner of Bracewell & Patterson’s Houston office and president-elect of the State Bar of Texas, has received a lifetime achievement award from the National School Board Association. Frels was cited for his efforts in desegregating Houston’s public schools. Akiko Mikumo and Marcia Goldstein, partners at Weil, Gotshal & Manges (New York), have been placed among the top “Dealmakers of the Year” by The American Lawyer, a sister publication of the NLJ. Mikumo was involved in the $14 billion Vivendi Universal Entertainment-to-NBC transaction. Goldstein received praise for her work in the WorldCom Inc. case.
