Speakers Paul M. Fires, a partner in the Philadelphia office of Weber Gallagher Simpson Stapleton Fires & Newby, spoke before the Philadelphia Bar Association’s recent workers’ compensation section meeting on the attempt of claimants’ attorneys to seek in excess of 20 percent in counsel fees. Fires concentrates his practice in the representation of employers in workers’ compensation matters. Cozen O’Connor member Scott B. Schwartz was a featured speaker at three recent events on intellectual property and trademark issues for paralegals. He discussed the Madrid Protocol at a roundtable session sponsored by the International Trademark Association on Feb. 17 and a Philadelphia Association of Paralegals Lunch ‘n’ Learn on Feb. 24. On Feb. 26, Schwartz also addressed the association of paralegals’ intellectual property committee on intellectual property rights for the Internet. Schwartz is a member of the intellectual property department, concentrating his practice in all aspects of trademark, copyright and unfair competition law. Fred Greenberg of the Law Offices of Fred Greenberg spoke on “Fair Competition Between Nonprofit and For-Profit Health Clubs” at the International Health, Racquet and Sportclub Association’s annual meeting in Las Vegas on March 22. Elected and Appointed Saul Ewing has announced that Joel R. Burcat, a partner in the Harrisburg office, and Jane Kozinski, a partner in the Princeton office, have been named chairman and vice chairwoman of the firm’s environmental department. Burcat practices in environmental law, litigation, counseling and toxic tort litigation. Kozinski concentrates her practice in representing corporate clients in environmental matters arising under CERCLA, RCRA and comparable state laws, including New Jersey’s ISRA, Spill Act and Solid Waste Management Act. Archer & Greiner has announced that Frank D. Allen has become a fellow of the American Col-lege of Trial Law-yers. The induction took place during the 2004 spring meeting of the college in Phoenix. Allen is a shareholder and chairman of the firm’s personal injury practice. He specializes in serious personal injury matters including products liability and medical malpractice for both the injured and self-insured companies. Events U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia will present the inaugural Justice Antonin Scalia Award for Professional Excellence at the Philadelphia Bar Association’s April 29 quarterly meeting and luncheon, to be held at noon in the grand ballroom at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue, Broad and Walnut streets. Scalia will also serve as the keynote speaker for the luncheon. Also at the luncheon, bar association members will welcome American Bar Association president Dennis W. Archer, the first African American to lead the ABA. Tickets are $50 for members of the bar association and $55 for non-members.
