With the deadline for income tax filings just two months away, one big player in the tax preparation industry lost its GC to another. In February, Kansas City, Missouri-based H&R Block Inc. named its first chief legal officer, Nicholas Spaeth, 54. The company’s gain, however, meant a loss for Intuit Inc., makers of TurboTax, the popular software for tax preparation. For Spaeth, joining H&R Block was a homecoming. Just seven months earlier he had left a job in Kansas City as senior vice president, general counsel, and secretary at G.E. Employers Reinsurance Corporation to accept the GC post at Mountain View, California-based Intuit. Spaeth stepped down after such a short interval because he wanted to keep his family in Kansas City, according to an Intuit press release. Spaeth was unavailable for comment. H&R Block spokeswoman Linda McDougall says that Spaeth’s title is different from his predecessor’s ex-H&R Block GC James Ingraham because he will be responsible for more business units. Spaeth will also oversee the company’s government relations activities.
