As a judicial law clerk for a New Jersey superior court judge, I am appalled by the behavior of each attorney in the California “empty podium” case ["Angry justices hear excuses from no-show lawyer, ex-boss," March 11]. Nothing frustrates a court more than pointed fingers and layered excuses. The best attorneys I see before our court are the ones who accept responsibility, even if they maintain that it was not completely their fault. The buck must stop somewhere, and a law firm’s founding partner should know just where. An attorney leaving a firm (for whatever reason) should cover his rear by contacting the court and stating that he no longer has authority to appear on behalf of a firm client. I see more courtesy in the New York/New Jersey trial courts than these two have shown to the high court of the state of California. These guys had better stay far away from New York and New Jersey.
