San Francisco On April 17, the California Bar Association will induct Kurt Melchiorand Ephraim Margolininto the Trial Lawyer Hall of Fame. Melchior, a partner and general counsel at Nossaman Guthner Knox & Elliott, has more than 50 years of experience in litigation. He represents policyholders in large-scale insurance coverage suits, defends major antitrust cases asserting price-fixing and other restraints of trade, and litigates antitrust consumer fraud, securities, contract and real estate matters, including numerous class actions. Margolin represents law offices and lawyers in contempt, sanctions, office dissolution and ethical matters. He also is an adjunct professor at Hastings College of the Law. Both he and Melchior are graduates of Yale Law School. Ralph Alldredge, formerly of Legal Strategies Group, is joining Preston Gates & Ellisas a partner. Alldredge represents clients in a broad range of civil cases, including patent infringement, antitrust, trade secrets, business torts, product liability and unfair competition. He is a Columbia Law School graduate. William Hancockis opening his own civil appellate practice April 1, to be known as The Law Office of William N. Hancock. He will continue as an independent contractor with Horvitz & Levy. Morrison & Foersterlitigation partner Tony Westhas been elected to the Hastings College of the Law board of directors. He will serve a 12-year term. He received his J.D. from Stanford Law School in 1992. Sean SeLeguehas been appointed chair of the State Bar’s Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct. SeLegue is a member of Rogers, Joseph, O’Donnell & Phillips’professional liability practice group. South Bay Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrichhas added Michael Frankas a partner in the employee benefits and compensation group. Previously he was with Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. Frank’s practice focuses on employee benefits, equity compensation and executive compensation. He is a 1995 graduate of University of Michigan Law School. Silicon Valley Law Grouphas added Francis Ferrerto its financial services group. Previously with Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, Ferrer will continue to practice in commercial finance, creditor’s rights and financial restructuring and real estate finance. Ferrer is a 1989 graduate of Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology. Former Swiss Law Group patent lawyer Lauren Stevenshas joined Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner. Stevens’ practice emphasizes strategic client counseling and patent procurement in the pharmaceutical and molecular biology areas. She holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Yale University and a J.D. from Stanford Law School. East Bay Morgan Miller Blairof Walnut Creek has added Michael Greeneto its real estate group as a partner. Greene, previously a partner with Bingham McCutchen, has more than 15 years of experience representing homebuilders, developers, corporate real estate users and other business clients. He is a 1987 graduate of Hastings College of the Law. Oakland City Attorney John Russohas been named California Lawyer of the Year for government/public policy by California Lawyer magazine. The eighth annual CLAY awards recognized Russo for his advocacy and innovation in public law while saving taxpayer money. Nancy O’Malley, chief assistant district attorney in Alameda County, has been inducted into the Alameda County Women’s Hall of Fame. O’Malley, who joined the DA’s office in 1984, created the sexual assault unit, which has become a model for other DA offices. Among her other achievements, she also started the Statutory Rape Vertical Prosecution Program in 1995, which continues today in 55 California counties. Sacramento The Schinner Law Group, based in San Francisco, has opened a Sacramento outpost. R. David Bolls IIIwill head the new office. Prior to joining the firm in 1999, Bolls was a tax consultant with Arthur Anderson and a corporate, tax and estate planning attorney with Curtis and Arata. Southern California Michael Attanasiohas joined Cooley Godwardin its San Diego office as a partner in the litigation practice. His practice focuses on securities litigation, government investigations and white-collar defense. Previously Attanasio was a partner at Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps. He receive his J.D. from Stanford Law School. Patrick Harderhas joined the Los Angeles office of Nossaman Guthner Knox & Elliottas an of counsel in the infrastructure group. Harder joins the firm from Obayashi Corp., where he was the vice president and general counsel for OC America Construction and its various other U.S. subsidiaries. He is a 1986 graduate of UCLA School of Law.
