When it comes to plaintiff’s employment claims, a good name is Lawless. That would be Barbara, who has been handling employment-related cases for 30 years, or her younger sister Therese, who has been practicing with Barbara for the past 15. The two were mentioned both individually and as a team during the course of The Recorder‘s survey. Barbara, 57, is “extremely dedicated to this,” said one mediator. “I could mediate with her from 8 in the morning till midnight.” Therese, 42, is “fearless,” according to another mediator. “Very well prepared. She’s had some big verdicts.” Two years ago the duo won a $5 million award, including $3.5 in punitive damages, in a fired executive’s defamation case against America Online, with Therese as lead attorney. They also have won a $3 million wrongful termination verdict with Barbara as lead attorney. One defense attorney said he thought the Lawlesses sometimes settle their cases too quickly. But that observation drew a laugh from one of the mediators, who said, “That’s not been my experience.” For Barbara, “it’s really fun” trying cases with her sister. “The only problem is we both hate being second chair.” Their firm, Lawless & Lawless, has one associate — the sisters’ niece, Aelish Baig. “I call it the old girls’ club,” Barbara says. “But that’s not fair to Aelish and Therese.”
