Ruth Kennedy, 48, executive vice president and general counsel of Electronic Arts Inc., announced in late November that she planned to step down from her post. Kennedy says she wants to take a less time-consuming job within the company, perhaps in its educational department, so she can devote more time to her children, ages 10 and 11. “The job is incredibly challenging and wonderful, and I have two young sons who are challenging and wonderful,” says Kennedy. During her tenure, Electronic Arts became a global company. And spending the requisite time on airplanes “doesn’t fit for me anymore,” says Kennedy. She says she will remain in the general counsel job until a replacement is found. Based in Redwood City, California, Electronic Arts is the nation’s leading video game maker. Kennedy, who has been GC for 13 years, is known for holding the line against excessive or gratuitous violence, sex, or profanity in the company’s games ["The Rules of the Game," July 2003]. Prior to joining Electronic Arts, Kennedy worked at tech start-ups, including Tolerant Systems, which subsequently became VERITAS Software Corporation.
