NEW LEADER AT SAN JOSE’S HOGE, FENTON After more than three years as managing partner of San Jose’s Hoge, Fenton, Jones & Appel, Michael McSweeney has stepped down so that partner Kathryn Meier could take his place. A 14-year veteran of Hoge, Fenton, Meier took over as managing partner of the 48-lawyer firm on Jan. 1. McSweeney, 57, said he thought the firm would benefit from having a younger partner at the helm. He added that Meier, 44, had demonstrated she’s adept at running an organization, citing her work with the Santa Clara County Bar Association. In 1994, Meier became the youngest lawyer to serve as the bar’s president. “She has an incredible knack for being able to see all of the disparate parts of an organization and pull them together in a cohesive structure and move everyone forward,” McSweeney said. Hoge, Fenton’s 20 partners elected Meier, head of the employment group, to the firm’s three-member executive committee in December and the committee in turn put her in the top slot. Aside from McSweeney and Meier, partner Janice Fox is also on the firm’s executive committee. Meier mulled joining management for a while, Meier said, but then decided it would be an opportunity to affect how the firm serves its clients. “I spend all day doing work with companies around strategic planning, organizational development and general advice about to how better treat their resources,” Meier said. “It translated pretty easily to try to do that here in our offices.” — Renee Deger
