HOLLAND & KNIGHT RISING STAR Holland & Knight selected partner Lynn Calkins and associate Susan Santana, both based in the firm’s D.C. office, for its 2004 Rising Star program — a year-long leadership and economic development program for women in or beyond their seventh year of practice. The women receive leadership and client service training, attend meetings with firm management, and prepare professional development plans. Three other lawyers, in the firm’s Seattle, Miami, and Chicago offices, were also chosen for the program. LEGAL NETWORK ADVISORY COUNCIL The Legal Network Advisory Council for the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington elected Kevin Fitzgerald as a councilmember. Fitzgerald, managing partner of Troutman Sanders’ D.C. office, provides guidance and leadership in addressing the community’s legal needs through the network. The network provides pro bono civil legal services and legal seminars to low-income residents. PILLSBURY WINTHROP Pillsbury Winthrop has appointed Thomas Flaherty managing partner of its Northern Virginia office. Flaherty, 53, oversees the operations and strategic growth of the 55-lawyer office and leads its employment and labor group. SQUIRE, SANDERS & DEMPSEY Squire, Sanders & Dempsey has appointed Joseph Markoski managing partner of its D.C. and Tysons Corner, Va., offices. Markoski, 55, will split his time between the offices.
