Pillsbury Winthrop litigation partner Patrick Marshall has been appointed managing partner of the firm’s San Francisco office. Marshall took the reins of the 170-lawyer office, the firm’s largest, on January 1. He replaces Andrea Wirum, who held the job for the past year. Wirum is leaving the post as a result of her election to the firm’s 12-member managing board in November. A Pillsbury attorney for 20 years, Marshall has spent the last several chairing the firm’s attorney development committee, which is responsible for the training, retention and review of all the firm’s associates. Marshall said he expects to continue to devote a substantial portion of his time to his practice, which focuses on complex commercial cases involving energy, intellectual property and breach of contract matters. “One learns to stretch and one learns to take on both” management and work duties, said Marshall. As San Francisco managing partner, Marshall will oversee the office’s operations and strategic growth. Marshall flagged practices such as life sciences, intellectual property and banking among the groups slated for growth in 2004. But with the economic downturn still hanging over the Bay Area, Marshall said he plans to carefully manage expenses. “We had a good year in 2003, but we want to maintain a sort of cautious approach,” said Marshall. David Snyder, the firm’s executive vice chair, said in a statement that Marshall’s proactive leadership skills and respect throughout the firm make him a good fit for the job. “He has always been known as someone who makes things happen,” said Snyder. “I am sure this quality will help to lead the San Francisco office.”
