HELLER CHINA EXPERT JUMPS TO WILSON Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati has lured Lucas Chang, a partner at Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe, to spearhead the firm’s business in Asian Pacific Rim countries. Chang joined Wilson Sonsini as a partner at its Palo Alto headquarters Tuesday, filling a void created in July when Asia-maven Carmen Chang left the firm for Shearman & Sterling. “We are committed to the Asia market,” said Jeffrey Saper, the managing director of strategic planning at Wilson. “We’re seeing a number of cross-border opportunities.” Chang, who is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese, specializes in corporate and securities work, as well as intellectual property matters. During his four-year stint at Heller Ehrman he represented Pacific Rim clients in a number of industries, including semiconductors, biotechnology and digital imaging. Chang has a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Washington and worked as a research scientist engineer at IBM Research and Union Carbide Corp. before becoming a lawyer. In a statement announcing Chang’s move to Wilson, Saper cited the importance of Chang’s engineering background and his fluency in international business. “He has extensive knowledge of the Asian market and understands the complex business issues U.S.-based and international companies face, whether expanding into Asia for the first time or ramping up their Asian operations and partnerships.” — Alexei Oreskovic JONES DAY COULD GET 100 PENNIE LAWYERS NEW YORK — As many as 100 Pennie & Edmonds lawyers may join the New York office of Jones Day in the coming days and weeks as the 120-year-old intellectual property boutique prepares to shut down by Dec. 31. More than 25 Pennie & Edmonds partners have accepted offers to join Jones Day, and offers have been extended to about 75 associates, said Dennis LaBarre, partner-in-charge of Jones Day’s New York office. If all of the Pennie & Edmonds associates accept the offers, Jones Day will have well over 300 lawyers in its New York office, making it the firm’s largest. The 2,100-lawyer firm presently has its largest offices in Cleveland and Washington, D.C. The group receiving offers from Jones Day constitutes the bulk of the lawyers at Pennie & Edmonds’ New York headquarters, which at the end of September accounted for 133 of the firm’s 190 lawyers. A small number of Jones Day offers have been extended to lawyers in the firm’s Palo Alto and Washington, D.C., offices, said LaBarre. On Tuesday, John Normile, managing partner at Pennie & Edmonds, hailed the arrangement as a boon to his firm’s lawyers. “We’re creating the best intellectual property group in the world,” he said. “We’ll obviously be the biggest and the best.” Neither Normile nor LaBarre would name any of the partners joining Jones Day, but sources familiar with the matter said, aside from Normile, the partners included litigation chair Brian Poissant and biotechnology and pharmaceutical group chair Laura Coruzzi. Normile said there was no firm deadline for associates pondering offers to join Jones Day. — The New York Law Journal
