Flavor – Geek-speak synonym for “version,” as in “Unix comes in a number of flavors.” Kernel The computer code that lies at the core of an operating system and controls the basic functions of a computer. Linux An “open source” computer operating system designed by Finnish programmer Linus Torvalds. A close relative of Unix (see below), it’s rising in popularity among corporate IT departments for its stability and cost it’s free, although some companies package it and sell it along with service and support. Open Source A movement by computer programmers around the globe to work collaboratively via the Internet to develop computer software. Linux and the kernel of Apple Computer, Inc.’s Mac OS X are open source programs. Unix A computer operating system designed by AT&T Bell Laboratories more than 30 years ago. The de facto standard for years in academic computer labs, Unix systems power much of the Internet. Powerful computer workstations (beefier than desktop PCs), produced by such computer makers as Sun Microsystems, Inc., and International Business Machines Corp., use Unix operating systems.
