New Partners Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker (Los Angles): The firm has elected 11 new partners: In San Francisco, Jeffrey Grube (employment), Gordon Hart (real estate) and John Phillips (litigation); in Orange County, Renee Raithel (tax) and Frank Ubell (litigation); in Tokyo, Edward Johnson (corporate); in San Diego, Kurt Kjelland (litigation); in Atlanta, Deborah Marlowe (employment); in Los Angeles, Mark Nelson (real estate); in Washington, Mark Poerio (employment); and in New York, Joshua Sternoff (corporate). Polsinelli Shalton & Welte: Three new shareholders have been chosen: In Kansas City, Mo., Marla R. Bell (financial services); in Overland Park, Kan., Nancy E. Racunas (business law); and in St. Louis, Llynn K. White (financial services). Proskauer Rose (New York): Marc A. Persily of the corporate department and private equity practice group, has been elevated to the partnership. He advises investment banks, other financial institutions and private equity boutiques in the United States, Europe and Latin America. Laterals Kaye Scholer (New York): Larry R. Feldman has joined the firm as its chief trial counsel and will be practicing out of its Century City, Calif., office. He has tried more than 100 civil cases in a career exceeding 30 years, and has been elected to both the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and the American College of Trial Lawyers. Latham & Watkins: Satoshi Karashima has signed on as a partner with Latham’s Tokyo office. He specializes in corporate law and makes the move from Tokyo’s Asahi Koma Law Offices. Nixon Peabody: George T. Skelly, formerly with New York’s Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, has joined as a partner in the business litigation practice group located in Boston. He represents clients in areas such as securities class actions and SEC investigations. Reed Smith: Bruce Markowitz has joined the firm’s partnership and will practice out of the Falls Church, Va., business and finance department. He is a corporate, restructuring and real estate transaction attorney, and moves from Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. Shipman & Goodwin (Hartford, Conn.): Robert R. Simpson has joined as a partner in the firm’s litigation department, practicing in the areas of products liability, toxic tort, complex commercial litigation and employment litigation. Steel Hector & Davis (Miami): Peter J. Marathas Jr., formerly of Boston’s Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, is now a partner in the firm’s home-based tax group. His practice centers on employee benefits and executive compensation. Fulbright & Jaworski (Houston): The firm’s San Antonio health care group has added to its roster new counsel Blanca Galo and Nicole M. McNeel. Galo’s practice focuses on the defense of insurance companies and McNeel has served as a civil trial lawyer handling malpractice and insurance defense claims. Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone (Detroit): Richard C. Sanders, a specialist in commercial litigation, and Eric P. Turner, who served previously as senior tax counsel to General Motors Corp., have joined as senior counsel in the firm’s principal office. Also joining the firm is associate Ryan A. Polkowski, who will be based in Troy, Mich. Firm Management Michael Best & Friedrich: Partner Richard J. Canter, a 14-year veteran in the firm’s Milwaukee office, will become firmwide managing partner on January 1, 2004, replacing John R. Sapp. During his long tenure on the managing committee, he helped establish and build the firm’s health law practice group. Named Albert C. Tan of Dallas-based Haynes and Boone has been placed on the 2003 “Best Lawyers Under 40″ list devised by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, a network representing more than 40,000 attorneys. Tan’s practice focuses on finance and cross-border deals, with a particular emphasis on U.S.-Asian transactions. Honored John F. Lynch, an intellectual property attorney with Washington-based Howrey Simon Arnold & White, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award given by the Sedona Conference for accomplishments in the areas of patent and IP litigation. Sedona Conference is a research and educational institute dedicated to the advanced study of law and policy in the realms of antitrust, intellectual property and complex litigation. New Office Greenberg Traurig: A new office comprising 20 attorneys has been opened in Dallas. Among those making the move are corporate attorney Scott Olson, tax expert Daniel P. Novakov, real estate lawyer Ralph Santos, corporate attorney Michael Thimmig and Michelle Mendez, current chairwoman of the Dallas Bar Association’s bankruptcy section.
