As one of San Francisco’s leading legal newspapers, The Recorder might do well to inform its readers that the proliferation of Wi-Fi hotspots recently touted in one of its articles (“Wi-Fi Gives Firms a Breath of Fresh Air,” Nov. 5) may end up giving firms a legal headache instead. Wi-Fi networks, like their cellular counterparts, rely upon microwave radiation to provide mobile connections for users. There is a growing debate within the scientific community over the potential dangers posed by microwave radiation, one sign of which is a recent Reuters report of a lawsuit filed by parents of children at an elementary school in Oak Park, Ill., over the school’s installation of a Wi-Fi network. Amidst this growing public awareness of the potential health impacts of this type of radiation, perhaps law firms should consider their own potential future legal liability before they ceremoniously jump onto this latest technological bandwagon.
