Several out-of-town firms expanded significantly, while most D.C. firms grew only a little or shrank. The biggest gains were posted by Sonnenschein and Alston & Bird. Overall, the busiest practice areas were IP, litigation, and international trade. Retrenching in the Capital Lateral poaching, attrition, merger fallout, and scaled-back hiring accounted for smaller head counts at 40 firms on this year’s top 100 list. Numbers fell most dramatically at Arent Fox and Powell, Goldstein. Business Beyond the District While Maryland firms remained steady, Northern Virginia offices experienced more dramatic ups and downs. Fees: Pricing to the Market Setting fees according to what the market will bear is inefficient. Instead of guesswork and discounting, firms should consider the price sensitivity of each client and matter. Midlevels Set Down Roots Midlevel associates, it seems, are focusing less on compensation and quality of life and more on getting quality work.
