After seven years as a litigator, Robert Carr was looking for a change of pace. Maybe a job with less conflict. Not as rowdy. Fewer cheap shots. What he got was hockey. As the vice president and general counsel of Detroit-based Olympia Entertainment, and as the general counsel of the Detroit Red Wings, Carr advises one of the nation’s most successful ice hockey franchises. His vast range of duties leads Carr to describe his knowledge as “a mile wide and an inch deep.” He deals with everything from Red Wings trademark and copyright issues to contracts to risk management and analysis. Olympia operates Detroit’s Fox Theatre, Cobo Arena, and the Joe Louis Arena home of the Red Wings. Other operations include The Second City comedy theater in Detroit, various restaurants, and affiliated companies such as the Detroit Tigers and pizza giant Little Caesar Enterprises. When the 39-year-old Carr isn’t cheering on the Red Wings, he is, not surprisingly, rooting for the Detroit Tigers. But he does have a life outside the stadium that includes books, music, and various hobbies not associated with helmets. How did you hear about the opportunity at Olympia Entertainment? I was doing employment litigation at Dickinson Wright, and the president of Olympia, Atanas Ilitch, asked me to consult on some personnel issues. There was a conflict with the firm, so he asked me to come work for him. What was the first hockey game you ever saw? I was about 14 years old and my friend and I didn’t have tickets, so we stood outside the stadium and asked everyone who walked by if they had any extra tickets. Someone did, and the seats were great. Who are your favorite players? Nicklas Lidstrom and Steve Yzerman. Do you have season tickets? I don’t have season tickets, but I can go whenever I want. Have you ever dressed up for a game? No. I wouldn’t consider myself a Joe Fan. I’m much more low-key. Describe the most over-the-top fan you’ve ever seen. There are lots of characters in the arena. One in particular is Mo Cheese, who comes to every game and does a dance whenever the D.J. plays “The Curly Shuffle.” He gets his name from a Three Stooges line. Have you ever been hit by a puck? No. Where do the Red Wings keep the Stanley Cup? The cup is maintained by the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. There are people known as the Keepers of the Cup, who bring the cup to whatever venue the winning team wants. For the first week or so, they travel from bar to bar. These guys don’t sleep. After that a schedule is put together. So the cup doesn’t really reside anywhere. What is your favorite sports team? I’m such a Detroit hometown person, so I’d have to say besides the Red Wings, the [Olympia-affiliated] Detroit Tigers. Sergei Fedorov just left the Red Wings to join the Mighty Ducks. What is it like to see top players play for other teams? Do you still like them,or does your loyalty disappear? It’s a business, so anytime a player leaves, I don’t get too emotional. But on a personal level, you get to know these people, so it’s a shame to see them go. CD currently in your stereo: Kid Rock [a musician from Detroit], believe it or not. Life goal: To be happy with myself without doing it at the expense of others.
